Works with the files your team already keeps

Add files one at a time or point ChatDocument at the folders where they already live. Everything lands in a space you choose. Questions in that space are answered only from what is inside it.

File formats

  • PDF, including scanned PDFs read with OCR
  • Word (DOCX)
  • Excel (XLSX, CSV)
  • PowerPoint (PPTX)
  • Plain text and Markdown
  • Web pages added by URL

Connected sources

  • Google Drive
  • SharePoint and OneDrive
  • Dropbox
  • Selected folders only, synced on a schedule
  • Space permissions decide who can ask
  • New and changed files picked up at each sync

From a folder of files to an answer you can check

Four steps, and each one leaves a trail back to the source page. See how it works in more detail.

  1. p. 1

    1. Upload or connect

Drop files into a space or connect a drive folder. Text is read page by page, and scans go through OCR.

  2. p. 2

    2. Ask

Type a question in plain language, the way you would ask a colleague who has read every file.

  3. p. 3

    3. Read the cited answer

Each statement carries the document name and page. Click a citation and the document opens at the highlighted passage.

  4. p. 4

    4. Share or export

Save the thread, send a teammate a link to the answer, or export a table to XLSX or CSV.

More than a chat box for one file

The same strict answering sits behind every tool your team uses on its documents.

Three colleagues at a meeting table comparing printed reports, one pointing at a highlighted paragraph

Extract to table

Define your own columns, for example party, term, renewal date and liability cap, and run them across a folder. Every cell links to its page. Export to XLSX or CSV.

Compare documents

Put two to five documents side by side, such as two versions of a contract or this year's travel policy against last year's. The differences come back as a list, each with its page. Compare documents in one request.

Summaries

One page, section by section, or a template your team writes once. Each line of the summary points to the page it summarises.

Shared spaces with roles

A space per team or per client, with owner, editor and asker roles. Invite by email, save threads and share answers by link.

When the answer is not there, it says so instead of guessing

Most AI tools fill a gap with something that sounds right. ChatDocument does the opposite. If the passages it retrieves from your space do not hold the answer, it says so in plain words and shows the closest passages it checked, each with its page.

  • No guessing from general knowledge
  • The closest passages it read, with document name and page
  • Every cited passage is checked in code before the answer appears

Put cited answers inside your own site or app

On Business and Enterprise, the widget adds a document assistant to a website or intranet with one script tag, restricted to the space you choose. The REST API covers upload, ask and extract. API questions count toward your plan like any other question.

FAQ

Full details are on the FAQ and the pricing page.

Can ChatDocument make up an answer?

Answers are written only from passages retrieved from the documents in the space you selected. Every statement cites a document and page, and each cited passage is checked in code to exist and to contain the quoted text before you see the answer. When your files do not hold the answer, ChatDocument says so and shows the closest passages it read instead of filling the gap from general knowledge.

Are my documents used to train AI models?

No. Your files are encrypted in transit and at rest, they are never used to train models, and the AI model providers we work with are bound by contract not to train on your content. You can delete a document or a whole space at any time, and it is removed from backups within 30 days.

Which file types work, and can it read scans?

PDF, Word (DOCX), Excel (XLSX, CSV), PowerPoint (PPTX), plain text, Markdown and web pages by URL. Scanned PDFs are read with OCR, and a scanned page counts as 3 pages toward your monthly page allowance.

What counts as a question, and what happens at the limit?

One cited answer is one question. In an extraction, each document row counts as one question, and a comparison counts as three. Daily and monthly limits reset on their own, deleting a document does not give usage back, and you can move to a larger plan at any time with the difference charged right away.

How do teams and permissions work?

Create a space per team, project or client and invite people by email as owner, editor or asker. Askers can question the documents without changing them. Roles come with Team and above, and Business and Enterprise add an audit log of who asked what and which pages answered it.

Can I connect Google Drive, SharePoint or Dropbox?

Yes. Pick the folders you want, and they sync on a schedule into a space whose permissions decide who can ask. Starter connects one drive, while Team, Business and Enterprise connect Google Drive, SharePoint and OneDrive, and Dropbox together.

Can we add ChatDocument to our website or our app?

Yes, on Business and Enterprise. The widget is a script tag restricted to one space, and the REST API handles upload, ask and extract. Questions asked through the widget or API count toward your plan.

How do billing and cancellation work?

Choose monthly billing or yearly billing, which costs half as much per month. Cancel any time and access runs to the end of the paid period. Payments are final, with the exceptions listed in the refund policy. Enterprise can pay by invoice.

Which languages does it understand?

ChatDocument answers in the language you ask in, and it reads documents written in most major languages, so an English question about a German contract gets an English answer that cites the German page.
